  • Wednesday 6:09 PM AMD, recently hit by executive defections (I, II), will provide the graphics processor (GPU) for Sony's next-gen console, according to former employees. AMD currently provides the provides the GPU for the Xbox 360, and will also reportedly do so for its successor, but an Nvidia (NVDA) processor handles the graphics for the PlayStation 3.

  • Wednesday 2:33 PM PC motherboard makers Asustek, ASRock, and Gigabte have slashed their Q1 shipment forecasts due to weak European demand and hard drive shortages, claims a Chinese-language paper. This is another negative datapoint for the PC industry, which yesterday saw #3 vendor Dell (DELL) report a 4% Y/Y drop in desktop sales, and a mere 1% increase in notebook sales for FQ4.

  • Friday 4:58 PM ARM-based (ARMH) Windows 8 (MSFT) systems are widely expected to be less power-hungry than x86 systems featuring Intel (INTC) and AMD processors. They might also be around 10% cheaper on average, claims Bernstein, and that could help them take a large chunk of the sub-$500 consumer notebook market, where cutting-edge performance isn't demanded. But will software issues stand in the way?

  • Friday 4:31 PM Eric Demers, who recently resigned as the head of AMD's graphics division, has turned up at mobile chip giant Qualcomm (QCOM). Qualcomm has invested heavily in boosting the performance of the Adreno graphics processing cores that go into its Snapdragon processors, and with the company hungry to boost Snapdragon's adoption within the PC, tablet, and TV markets, Demers could be a useful addition.
