Wednesday 2:33 PM PC motherboard makers Asustek, ASRock, and Gigabte have slashed their Q1 shipment forecasts due to weak European demand and hard drive shortages, claims a Chinese-language paper. This is another negative datapoint for the PC industry, which yesterday saw #3 vendor Dell (DELL) report a 4% Y/Y drop in desktop sales, and a mere 1% increase in notebook sales for FQ4.

- Tuesday 12:07 PM Fusion-io (FIO -4.6%) gives back some of Friday's big gains after Craig-Hallum's Richard Shannon expresses skepticism about rumors of a bid from Intel (INTC). Shannon's logic: Intel isn't traditionally a buyer of technologies complementary to its server CPU business (though recent examples to the contrary exist), and is a supporter of the NVMe standard, which will enable hardware that competes with Fusion-io's solutions. [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Friday 4:58 PM ARM-based (ARMH) Windows 8 (MSFT) systems are widely expected to be less power-hungry than x86 systems featuring Intel (INTC) and AMD processors. They might also be around 10% cheaper on average, claims Bernstein, and that could help them take a large chunk of the sub-$500 consumer notebook market, where cutting-edge performance isn't demanded. But will software issues stand in the way? [Tech]
- Friday 1:01 PM 2012 has been a good year to own large-cap tech stocks; while Apple's run-up has received the most attention, less flashy names such as Microsoft (MSFT - previously), Intel (INTC), Dell (DELL), and H-P (HPQ) are also posting solid gains. Low P/Es and hefty cash balances (even if much of the cash is offshore) are drawing investors to the space, as is optimism that the bottom might not fall out of enterprise IT spending. [Tech]
- Friday 10:50 AM Fusion-IO (FIO +6.7%) shares surge on renewed takeover chatter suggesting Intel (INTC +1.7%) could target the company in a deal, although the sources of the rumor appear questionable. [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
